This is not World War II. Progress in the "War to End All Wars" was measured in yards, not miles. The Italians were on the side of the Allies, while the Turks – at the time the center of the Ottoman Empire – were part of what was then known as the Central Powers. The German Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire were the other two major Central Powers.
The main Allies, sometimes called the Entente, consisted of the British Empire, France, Italy, the United States of America, and the Russian Empire. There were other members in the alliance as well, but they basically belonged to and obeyed one of the major superpowers. Indeed, if General Pershing had not fought to maintain integrity, the Americans might have been only substitutes for the French or the British on the battlefield.
Axis & Allies: WWI 1914 puts players in control of one of the major powers, each with their own pawns. Other figures represent artillery, tanks, aircraft and fleets of either the Allies or the Central Powers.
