In Splendor, players are renaissance merchants trying to acquire gem mines, transportation, and shops, everything they need to become the most famous merchants in the province. If you're rich enough, you might even get a visit from a nobleman, which will no doubt make you even more famous as a merchant.
Splendor is a very quick and easy to learn card and token game, but thanks to the random layout, it will be different every time you play, with different challenges to overcome and changing strategies to ultimately reach your goal and beat your rivals. During their turn, players can either (1) collect tokens (gems), or (2) buy and build a card, or (3) reserve one card. If you collect tokens, you can take 3 different gems or 2 identical gems. If you buy a card, you "build" it into your territory after paying its price. To reserve a card (so your competitors can't get it), you place it face down in front of you so you can play it later; in addition, when reserving a card you also receive gold as a "universal token" that can be used as a gem of any color.
All cards you buy increase your wealth – increasing the value of your gems, raising prestige, or otherwise helping you in the game. The game is won when one of the players collects 15 prestige points.
