In 1945, unexpected allies destroyed Hitler's war machine and mankind's most powerful weapons caused the Japanese Empire to stumble in a whirlwind of fire. Where many world powers once stood, only two remain. The world only had a few short months to collectively enjoy peace before another conflict broke out. Unlike the mass conflicts of previous decades, this conflict was fought not with soldiers and tanks, but with spies and politicians, scientists and intellectuals, artists and traitors. Twilight Struggle is a two-player simulation of the 45-year fire dance of intrigue, prestige and war between the Soviet Union and the United States. The whole world was their stage, where these two titans fought, trying to establish the supremacy of their ideology and way of life. The game begins in the ruins of Europe, as the two new superpowers compete on the ruins of World War II, and ends in 1989, when only the United States of America remains after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Twilight Struggle inherits its core systems from We the People and Hannibal: Rome Vs. Carthage. It's a fast-paced, straightforward game, in that tradition. The game map is a world map of the period on which players use influence in an attempt to find allies and control states for their hegemon. As with other GMT card based games, decision making is important, how do you best use your cards and influence with limited resources?
Twilight Struggle Event cards add detail and uniqueness to the game. In them you will find most of the historical events such as the Arab-Israeli conflicts of 1948 and 1967, the Vietnam War and the peace movements in the USA, the Cuban Missile Crisis and many other incidents that brought the world to the brink of nuclear destruction. Additional systems depict the Space Race, rising world tensions and looming nuclear war.
