Part of the GMT Lunchtime series, Twilight Struggle: Red Sea – Conflict in the Horn of Africa is a two-player card game that improves upon the systems found in the award-winning Twilight Struggle .
The year is 1974 and the Soviet Union and the United States are competing in a deadly life-and-death conflict around the world. As often happened during the Cold War, a relatively unknown region of the world suddenly became central. Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, a key U.S. ally in Africa, has grown old and increasingly dictatorial. After his overthrow in 1974, a coalition of Marxists took the reins of power. These new revolutionary leaders set in motion a chain of events that upended the regional balance of power and produced all the familiar elements of Cold War rivalry on the Somali Peninsula.
With less context and shorter duration, Twilight Struggle: Red Sea is a great way to introduce new players to the Twilight Struggle system, while retaining all the tension, decision-making, and theme of the original game. Cards from Twilight Struggle can be used in Twilight Struggle: Red Sea and vice versa.
