Dark Ages is a story-driven civilization-building game with an innovative action-choice mechanism. As long as your action marker is on the board, you can score additional secondary points each time you or another player takes an action.
While Dark Ages has goals similar to other 4X games that encourage exploration of side regions, expansion of territory, and elimination of opponents, it does so with several Euro game mechanics. Collect resources from the lands you control and use them to improve your cities and fortifications. Some types of buildings will provide new ways to exploit game mechanics, others will enhance your military power or simply give you victory points. As you expand the territory, you will secure noble titles, discover new technologies and train military units. Each region and leader provides new asymmetric choices and unique abilities.
Dark Ages: Heritage of Charlemagne shares the same core mechanics as Dark Ages: Holy Roman Empire , but focuses on western Europe and has a different game board.
