In the Race for the Galaxy card game, players build galactic civilizations by playing cards in front of them that represent worlds or technological and social progress. Some worlds will allow players to produce produce that can be used later to draw more cards or gain victory points when the relevant technologies become available. They basically provide improvements and worlds that can't produce products, but better industrial worlds also give bonuses.
