Terraforming Mars Ares Expedition: Discovery adds four new mechanics to the core game: awards, milestones, improved phase cards, and wild tags.
Awards is an end-game scoring opportunity for players with the highest scores. Three awards are drawn at the beginning of the game, so players always know what they need to aim for and what they will be rewarded for at the end. The player with the most of that item gets 5VP, second place gets 2VP.
Milestones are VPs that are awarded during gameplay. They are awarded to the first player to reach that milestone. Milestones are worth 3VP at the end of the game.
Some new project and corporation cards allow players to upgrade their phase cards. Each phase card has two different versions that allow players to choose between them when upgrading. The upgrade allows players to get better bonuses in this phase.
Some new project cards have a wild tag. any time a player turns up this card, either from the deck (for an effect) or from their hand because they're going to play it, that player chooses which tag they want to play it with. Tokens are used to keep track of which tag was selected for the rest of the game.
